You may know the word חופש[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/חופש-#.m4a” /] as meaning vacation. While Israelis do use חופש in this sense, the proper word for vacation is חופשה[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/חופש-#.m4a” /], while חופש means freedom.
For example:
[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/חופש-#.m4a” /]לכל אדם בריא יש חופש בחירה.
Every healthy person has freedom of choice.
A related word is חירות[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/חופש-#.m4a” /], though much like its English equivalent, liberty, people don’t use it much in day-to-day conversation.
Please note – בשבוע הבא אני בחופשה[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/חופש-#.m4a” /] – next week I’m on vacation – there will be no Daily Doses.
[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/חופש-#.m4a” /]חג פסח שמח!
Happy Passover holiday!
