Perhaps you’re familiar with the biblical poem, Song of Solomon or Song of Songs. The first two words of that poem comprise its title in Hebrew: שִׁיר הַשִּׁירִים  – literally, the Song of Songs.

The Hebrew word for poem or song is שיר. Likewise, the verb to sing is לָשִׁיר It’s an active-simple verb of the hollow variety, with conjugations such as:
 
הוּא שָׁר יָפֶה.
He sings nicely.
אֲנַחְנוּ שַׁרְנוּ כָּל הַלַּיְלָה סְבִיב הַמְּדוּרָה.
We sang.
 
הֵם יָשִׁירוּ אֶת הַשִּׁיר הֶחָדָשׁ שֶׁלָּהֶם.
They will sing their new song.
