how to say “aged wine” in Hebrew

יַיִן מְיֻשָּׁן

The Biblical Term

In Biblical times, good aged wine might have been called יַיִן יָשָׁן נוֹשָׁן listen and repeat, as some sweet wines are called today.

נוֹשָׁן listen and repeat means having become old. The word is derived from the נִפְעַל verb form and the root י.שׁ.נ (y.sh.n) meaning old. It also appears in the Biblical context (וַיִּקְרָא יג:יא listen and repeat – Leviticus 13:11)of the צָרַעַת listen and repeat (leprosy) skin affliction:

צָרַעַת נוֹשֶׁנֶת הִוא בְּעוֹר בְּשָׂרוֹ וְטִמְּאוֹ הַכֹּהֵן לֹא יַסְגִּרֶנּוּ כִּי טָמֵא הוּא.
It is a chronic (very old) skin disease and the priest shall pronounce them unclean. He is not to isolate them, because they are already unclean.

The Modern Term

By the time of the Mishnah, usage of נושן had given way to a different word, מְיֻשָּׁן listen and repeat, and that is the word in colloquial use today. This word also employs the root י.שׁ.נ, but invokes the passive-intensive verb form

For example:

יַיִן מְיֻשָּׁן הוּא הַיַּיִן הַטּוֹב בְּיוֹתֵר.
Aged wine is the best wine.

מיושן also means outdated or obsolete.

For example:

לַמְרוֹת שֶׁהַשִּׁמּוּשׁ בְּתַקְלִיטִים הוּא שִׁיטָה מְיֻשֶּׁנֶת לְהַאֲזָנָה, עֲדַיִן יֵשׁ אֲנָשִׁים שֶׁאוֹסְפִים אֹתָם.
Even though the use of records is an obsolete method of listening, there are still those who collect them.
