As the new Jewish year approaches, many of us are looking back at this past year with a potpourri of thoughts emotion. If you’re like me, there’s stuff you’re proud of, as well as stuff you regret.

The Modern Hebrew word for regret the noun or remorse is חֲרָטָה   .
 
For example:
 
הַחֲרָטָה הִיא חֵלֶק מֵהַחַיִּים.
Remorse is part of life.
 
 
Note the use of the definite article -הַ    before those nouns.
 
בן אדם חש חרטה
 
 
To regret, the reflexive verb, is לְהִתְחָרֵט   . 
 
For example:
 
הִיא הִתְחָרְטָה עַל הַהַחְלָטָה רַק מִסְפַּר רְגָעִים אַחֲרֵי שֶׁהִיא קִבְּלָה אֹתָהּ.
She regretted the decision just a few moments after she made it.
 
 
להתחרט also means to back out, as described here.
