how to say “hands-free device” in Hebrew

Can’t read Hebrew yet?

דִּבּוּרִית

אָזְנִיּוֹת listen and repeat are headphones, but wearing אזניות with wires while driving in Israel will earn you a big fat ticket. Here, drivers may talk on the phone only if they’ve got a hands-free (and cordless) device, attached to the car itself.

דבורית טלפון

This device is called a דִּבּוּרִית listen and repeat. Its root is ד.ב.ר (d.b.r) meaning thing or word. It’s the same root as לְדַבֵּר listen and repeat to speak. With the diminutive ית- listen and repeat ending, a דיבורית is a mini device that facilitates speaking.

For example:

הַאִם מֻתָּר לְדַבֵּר בִּשְׁעַת הַנְּהִיגָה בְּאֶמְצָעוּת דִּבּוּרִית בְּלוּטוּס?
Is it allowed to speak while driving using a Bluetooth hands-free device?

The answer is:

טֶכְנִית, אָסוּר, אָבָל בַּמְּצִיאוּת אֵין אֲכִיפָה לְכָךְ.
Technically, it’s not allowed, but in reality there is no enforcement for it.
