משחת שיניים

The Hebrew term for toothpaste is מִשְׁחַת שִׁנַּיִם ( ). The word משחת is a construct form of the word for paste or cream – מִשְׁחָה ( ) (see entry on cream). We use משחת (in the phrase משחת שיניים, since we’re talking about paste of the teeth – the letter ה (h) changes into a ת (t) in such an of  – or construct – relationship with the other noun, paste.

An example:

נִתַּן לְהַשִּׂיג מִשְׁחַת שִׁנַּיִם בִּטְעַמִים מְגֻוָּנִים.

One can get toothpaste in a variety of flavors.

The word משחה comes from the root מ.שׁ.ח, the same as that of the word מָשִׁיחַ (messiah – or literally, anointed one.
