how to say “breakthrough” in Hebrew

פְּרִיצַת דֶּרֶךְ

To break into a house is לִפְרוֹץ לְתוֹך בַּיִת  listen and repeat, where לפרוץ  listen and repeat is a simple verb of the root פ.ר.צ (p.r.ts) and means to break in or to break through. Likewise, a פְּרִיצָה לְבַיִת  listen and repeat is a break-in to (one’s) home.

On a happier note, a breakthrough is a פְּרִיצַת דֶּרֶךְ  listen and repeat – literally, a breaking through of a way.

For example:

גִּלּוּי הַפֶּנִיצִילִין הִוָּה פְּרִיצַת דֶּרֶךְ עֲנָקִית בִּתְחוּם הָרְפוּאָה.
The discovery of penicillin marked a giant breakthrough in the field of medicine.
