how to say “interpret” in Hebrew
having trouble seeing the print?
on Facebook!
Addendum on yesterday’s posting:
A couple of people pointed out to me that the acronym סַכּוּ”ם (sah-KOOM) actually stands for all three main elements in dinnerware: סַכִּין, כַּף וּמַזְלֵג (sah-KEEN, kahf oo-mahz-LEG) – knife, (table)spoon, fork – and not just the first and last. Thank you!
Today’s dose…
In the Torah portion to be read tomorrow by Jews around the world, Joseph earns his ticket into the upper echelons of ancient Egypt by interpreting dreams. The word (a simple verb) used there for interpret is לִפְתּוֹר (leef-TOHR), which means to solve in Modern Hebrew. In that context, an interpretation is a פִּתְרוֹן (peet-ROHN) – today, a solution.
The word (an active-intensive verb) used in later Hebrew as well as today for to interpret is לְפָרֵש (leh-fah-RESH), while interpretation is פֵּרוּש (peh-ROOSH). פירוש is also one of the words for meaning.
שבת שלום וסוף שבוע נעים לכולם!
Shabbat Shalom and a pleasant weekend to all!
