אֵרוּעַ הַתְרָמָה

In order to do their good work, organizations need funds. So they go out and raise money in all sorts of creative ways, one of which is to hold a posh event where people come all dressed up, drink some good wine and make donations.

fundraising event אירוע התרמה

Such an event is called a fundraiser in English, and אֵרוּעַ הַתְרָמָה listen and repeat – literally, an event of fundraising – in Hebrew.

For example:

גַּם מוֹפַע מוּזִיקָלִי יָכוֹל לְהַוֹּת אֵרוּעַ הַתְרָמָה.
A musical performance can also constitute a fundraising event.

The word התרמה listen and repeat comes from the title of this week’s Torah portion – תְּרוּמָה listen and repeat – literally, donation. The word תרומה itself comes from the root ר.ו.מ (r.w.m) meaning lifting or raising.

התרמה is a noun deriving from Hebrew’s active-causative verb form, where the verb itself is לְהַתְרִים listen and repeat to fund-raise.

Synonyms of להתרים include לְגַיֵּס כְּסָפִים listen and repeat – literally, to collect funds – and לְגַיֵּס מַשְׁאַבִּים listen and repeat to collect resources.
