The word טפלה in אמונה טפלה-superstition
is the feminine form
of the word טפל – secondary
as in “the main thing and the secondary” (the wheat and the chaff)
העיקר is the main thing
and הטפל this is what is secondary to it
that which clings to it
but is secondary to the primary
Now, these words are related to the word טפיל-parasite/leech
because a leech is something that sticks
to something else
And perhaps you would think – like me
that טפל and טפלה are related
to the word לטפל-to take care of
After all, it’s the same root – ט.פ.ל
But it turns out that they are probably not related
because לטפל (error in spoken material) comes from Arabic
and in Arabic, ט.פ.ל – this root is
طفل – children
and the (Biblical) Hebrew equivalent is טף
as we saw last week or two weeks ago
שמרטף is the one who watches over the children
so לטפל-to take care of, comes from the word for children – actually
and טפל and טפלה (secondary)
are related to the concept of sticking to something
