Today marks five years since the first Ulpan La-Inyan class of four people took place in my apartment in Jerusalem.

So I figured now’s a good time to express gratitude… and to teach you the Hebrew word for thanks. Let’s start with the latter.

The Hebrew way of saying thank you is תּוֹדָה  listen and repeat. The word first appears in Hebrew literature in the Torah (וַיִּקְרָא ז,יב – Leviticus 7,12), where it refers to the type of sacrifice that expresses gratitude.

The root of תודה is ו.ד.ה (w.d.h) meaning acknowledgement.

At this time I’d like to express תודה to some of the many, many people who have made Ulpan La-Inyan a success over the past five years.

תודה לַצֶּוֶת  listen and repeat (thanks to the staff) at AACI – Sheila, Carole, Josie, David, Zev, Galena, Dror, Michal, Elana, Rafi, Elayna, Bryna Lee, Yael, Naava, Moshe, Rolene, Naomi, Julie, Donna, Belle, Ruth, Jan and Helen in Tel Aviv, and to past employees, Michael, Noam and Daniel. You guys have been such a pleasure to work with and such a support.

תודה לצוות at Telfed – Dorron, Susan, Sharon and Helayne. Thank you for championing us and for checking in when we’re on hiatus in Raanana!

תודה לַלָּקוֹחוֹת  listen and repeat – thanks to the client programs – Aardvark Israel, Onward Israel, Hewlett-Packard, Machetshim-Agan, Beit Chatam in Rehovot, the Israel Project, the Begin Center, Yeshivat Hakotel, Midreshet Moriah, Bnei Akiva, Yeshivat Eretz HaTzvi and TRIBE. Thank you for the opportunity to provide you with quality Hebrew-language instruction.

תודה לַמִּשְׁפָּחָה  listen and repeat – thanks to the/my family – Mom, Abba (my Hebrew teacher), Danny and Erica, Karen, Savta, Bila and Itamar, Grandma, Eti, Shimon and all the Noimans. Thank you for believing in me and this project.

תודה לַחֲבֵרִים  listen and repeat– thanks to the/my friends who have graciously offered their advice and given me strength with their enthusiasm.

תודה to Ben Goldfarb for helping me find the inspiration for opening an ulpan.
תודה

תודה לקוראים  listen and repeat to the readers of this Daily Dose of Hebrew for being part of this ever-growing educational circle.

תודה למורים  listen and repeat – to the teachers of English, Hebrew and Semitics at Yeshiva University – you were right that a liberal arts education does pay off.

תודה לצות המעולה שלי  listen and repeat– thank you to my excellent staff. I’m so fortunate to have worked and to be working with kind, talented, dedicated people from Efrat and Jerusalem in the east, moving to Ramat Beit Shemesh, and then to the coast, to Raanana, Rehovot and Tel Aviv… and to the shores of the United States. You are the friendly face, clear voice and great value of Ulpan La-Inyan.

תודה to all the people whom I’m sure I forgot to mention…

אַחֲרוֹן אַחֲרוֹן חָבִיב  listen and repeat – last but not least – תודה to the close to 1000 students we have had the opportunity to serve thus far. Many of you I’ve had the honor of teaching myself, and many of you have kept me going by confirming that what we’re offering is indeed great stuff. Don’t forget that you’ve got lifetime access to talmidim.ulpan.com. Use it!

And one more… תודה to the One who has made it all possible – for me and for you.

תודה רַבָּה  listen and repeat – great thanks.
