The uppermost part of a tree, the treetop, is צמרת[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/צמרת-#.m4a” /] in Hebrew. It’s also the word for the upper echelons of, say, a government, as in:
[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/צמרת-#.m4a” /]בצמרת השלטון יושבים כמה אנשי צבא בכירים.
In the upper echelons of the government (rulership) sit several senior military personnel.
צמרת has a synonym which is used only in poetry… as well as in a name: אמיר[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/צמרת-#.m4a” /]. You may recognize it from the Arabic word Emir, as in the United Arab Emirates: in Arabic, it means prince, also someone “at the top of the tree.”
