how to say “to project” in Hebrew
having trouble seeing the print?
Hebrew vocabulary with…
There are parts of ourselves that we find unpleasant and wish we could forget about. But our unconscious mind doesn’t allow for that, so we end up seeing those parts of ourselves in others. We all do it – it’s part of being human. We project our stuff onto others.
The Hebrew word for that kind of projecting is the active-causative הפעיל verb, לְהַשְׁלִיך (leh-hahsh-LEEKH), while projection is הַשְׁלָכָה (hahsh-lah-KHAH) – which also means a consequence. The word להשליך means, literally, to cast something or to throw something.

There’s another usage of the English word to project, the kind involving throwing images onto a screen. In Hebrew, that’s called לְהַקְרִין (leh-hahk-REEN), employing the root ק.ר.נ (k.r.n) meaning a ray or beam. Following the same הפעיל pattern as before, the act of projecting an image is הַקְרָנָה (hahk-rah-NAH).
