how to say “snacks” in Hebrew

חֲטִיפִים

When we snack, we grab food. Thus the Modern Hebrew word for snack – חֲטִיף   – means literally something grabbed

For example:

צִמּוּקִים וּבוֹטְנִים הֵם חֲטִיפִים בְּרִיאִים.
Raisins and peanuts are healthy snacks.

חטיף comes from a more ancient word, the simple verb לַחְטוֹף   of the root ח.ט.פ (kh.t.p), which means to grab in the literal sense… as well as to receive something in the figurative, not-so-happy sense.

For example:

הַיֶּלֶד הַשּׁוֹבָב חָטַף סְטִירָה.
The naughty boy got slapped (received a slap).
