In English, we have one word to cover the act of donning a variety of types of apparel: to wear.

In Hebrew, we have different verbs for different articles of clothing.

לנעול נעליים

To wear shoes is לִנְעוֹל נַעֲלַיִם  listen and repeat. As you can probably tell just by looking at the two words, the root of לנעול listen and repeat is נ.ע.ל (n.a.l), the same root as that of shoe – נַעַל listen and repeat.

לנעול is an active-simple verb, but it follows a slightly different pattern from the norm: it follows the אֶפְעַל-“efal” variety.

For example, here’s how to tell a boy to put on his shoes:

תִּנְעַל נַעֲלַיִם!
literally, put on shoes!

And here’s how to tell a girl to do the same:

תִּנְעֲלִי נַעֲלַיִם!

Here’s a chart to help you learn to conjugate אפעל verbs such as לנעול.
