how to say “preference” in Hebrew

הַעֲדָפָה

The verb לְהַעֲדִיף    – to prefer – comes from the root ע.ד.פ (a.d.f) meaning extra or hanging over the edge

For example:

אֲנָשִׁים מַעֲדִיפִים לְהִשָּׁאֵר בַּבַּיִת מֵאֲשֶׁר לָצֵאת בַּגֶּשֶׁם.
People prefer to stay home over going out in the rain.

Likewise, preference is הַעֲדָפָה   , though the word is rarely used to mean personal preference as it is in English. Rather, it refers to preference in the sense of preferential treatment

For example:

קַיָּם דִּיּוּן סוֹעֵר סְבִיב הַעֲדָפָה מְתַקֶּנֶת.
There is a stormy debate surrounding Affirmative Action (literally corrective preference).
