Yesterday I introduced the common Hebrew word for relationships or couplehood – זוּגִיּוּת (zoo-ghee-YOOT).

An important element in healthy such relationships is maturity. The Hebrew word for maturity is the same as that of educational matriculation – בַּגְרוּת (bahg-ROOT), of the root ב.ג.ר (b.g.r).

כובע של בוגר תואר

For example:

לַיַּלְדָּה לֹא הָיְתָה הַבַּגְרוּת הַנִּדְרֶשֶׁת כְּדֵי לְהִכָּנֵס לְכִתָּה א’.
The girl didn’t have the required maturity to enter the first grade.
(lah-yahl-DAH loh hah-yeh-TAH hah-bahg-ROOT hah-need-REH-shet keh-DEH-ee leh-hee-kah-NES leh-khee-TAH AH-lef)
To describe someone as mature, use בּוֹגֵר (boh-GHER) for a male and בּוֹגֶרֶת (boh-GHEH-ret) for a female. You’d use the same word to identify a graduate of a school or program.

The process of maturing or adolescence is הִתְבַּגְּרוּת (heet-bah-gheh-ROOT).
