מִלְּכַתְּחִילָּה
If you’ve had some experience with Hebrew, you probably know the word התחלה – beginning, as in:
ספר לי שוב, מההתחלה.
Tell me again, from the beginning.
התחלה comes from the הפעיל verb להתחיל – to start, whose root is ת.ח.ל. This root gives us a more sophisticated word, מלכתחילה – from the start or in the first place.
For example:
אל תשאל אותי. הייתי נגד זה מלכתחילה.
Don’t ask me. I was against it from the start.
and
איך לדעתך היא הגיעה לשם מלכתחילה?
How do you think she got there in the first place?
מלכתחילה made its first textual appearance in the Talmud.

Hi friends
the word מלכתילה – from the start, comes from a halachic (Jewish law) concept
that appears in the Talmud
לכתחילה – to begin with
which is the ideal situation
when doing something from the beginning, as it should be
as opposed to בדיעבד – after it’s done, which means
if we have already done it that way…
for example
on Passover, at the Seder
one is meant to lean to the left
when eating the matzah
this is the לכתחילה (ideal) situation
but, if we didn’t lean to the left
and ate matzah
we have still fulfilled the mitzva in retrospect
