For those of you who have been to Chabad houses in various parts of the world, or have contacted the Jewish Agency or Nefesh B’Nefesh about making aliyah, the word שָׁלִיחַ listen and repeat emissary – may ring a bell.

In Modern Hebrew, the word שליח refers to a bearer of items or of information… such as the guy who delivers your pizza:

הַשָּׁלִיחַ הִגִּיעַ לִפְנֵי הַזְּמַן, אָז נָתַנּוּ לוֹ טִיפּ יָפֶה.
The delivery man arrived before the (said) time, so we gave him a nice tip.

A female delivery person is a שְׁלִיחָה listen and repeat. And the correct plural in Modern Hebrew are שְׁלִיחִים listen and repeat – as opposed to the Chabad version, שְׁלוּחִים listen and repeat.
