If you’ve taken our Level 1 class or otherwise have some basic Hebrew under your belt, you likely know the word for card or ticket: כַּרְטִיס (kahr-TEES). This word is borrowed from the ancient Greek χάρτης (chartēs) meaning paper or papyrus.

A word that you may not know is that for credit, or the trust that enables a transaction without money present: אַשְׁרַאי (ahsh-RAH-ee). This word comes from Hebrew’s sister-language, Aramaic.

Thus a credit card is a כרטיס אשראי (kahr-TEES ahsh-RAH-ee). More than one credit card is כרטיסֵי אשראי (kahr-tee-SEH-ee ahsh-RAH-ee).
