Whereas the Hebrew word for bubble gum, מַסְטִיק (MAHS-teek), comes from Ancient Greek and is related to the English word masticate (meaning chew), the Modern Hebrew word chew-able comes from what appears to me an authentic Semitic root, though not found in Biblical Hebrew: ל.ע.ס (l.a.s).


The words לָעִיס (lah-EES – masculine) and לְעִיסָה (leh-ee-SAH – feminine) mean both chew-able, as in chew-able medicine – and chewy, as in chewy granola bars.

Likewise, the Modern Hebrew word for to chew is לִלְעוֹס (leel-OHS), a simple verb.
