A while back I did an entry on making a dream come true – in the active sense. The expression was לְהַגְשִׁים חֲלוֹם (leh-hahg-SHEEM khah-LOHM), with להגשים being an active-causative verb. I wrote that rain – גֶּשֶׁם (GHEH-shem) – is invoked as the root of the concept of materializing, or coming true.
Since I’ll be playing a Shlomo Artzi song on my radio show today at noon Israel time, using the term to come true, I thought I’d introduce it properly here: לְהִתְגַּשֵּׁם (leh-heet-gah-SHEM). This is a reflexive-intensive verb.
Thus a dream come true, in Hebrew, חֲלוֹם שֶׁהִתְגַּשֵּׁם (khah-LOHM sheh-heet-gah-SHEM) – literally, a dream that has come true.
