Hey dear friends
You may have thought that the word סיכה-pin
like this pin, or a more
spiky pin, is related
to the word סיכה-annointment/lubrication
which is one of the pleasures forbidden
on Yom Kippur, but the two words
are not related, because the root of סיכה-ann./lub.
is ס.ו.כ, and the root of סיכה-pin
is not so clear, but it’s apparently
שׂ.כ.כ, an ancient Semitic root that appears
it seems also in the word סכין-knife, which makes sense
when we look at the words themselves
with vocalization, we see that there’s a י in the word
סיכה-ann./lub., which indicates the ו in the root
By contrast, in the word סִכָּה-pin, there’s no י
but there’s a dot of emphasis in the כ, indicating
a doubling of the כ
