The word לוותר – today we use it
to mean “to give up” as well
to stop doing something I’m trying to do
but the original meaning
which still serve us today
is “to forgo mine for the other”
It’s like “sacrifice,” but it is more noble
more gentle than that
For example, , “the boy learned to give up his toy
for the sake of his little brother who wanted it so much”
We talk about ויתור – giving up
as a good character trait worth acquiring
