Hello Dear Friends
Today is Holocaust and Heroism (Memorial) Day
in Israel
And I’ll take advantage of this opportunity
to talk a bit about what
my grandmother of blessed memory told me
My grandmother was
my most direct link to the Holocaust
She once told me the story
that she had not told her children
my father and my aunt
and she said that when she arrived at Auschwitz
so someone pointed to the smoke
rising from the crematoria
and said to her, “that is your mother”
It’s amazing how words can be forgotten
but sights are very hard to forget
even though I did not see them with my own eyes
But here I am
after seventy-three years, almost
of the State of Israel
and seventy-six years
since the end the War
and … who won?
