וכן ירבו – זאת הרגשה נהדרת
ואני מודה לבורא עולם
יש לך איזה משהו שאתה רוצה להגיד

אני באתי מבית מאוד חסידי
ולמדתי בילדותי גמרא וחומש
אז למעשה
הקושי היה לדבר את העברית המחודשת
ולדבר – במקום להגיד “בוריך” להגיד “ברוך”
היסוד היה לי
אבל חוץ מזה הייתי מיד מעורה
כי איך שהגעתי לארץ
הלכתי לישיבה
כעבור שנה התגייסתי לצבא
כבר הייתי יחד עם דוברי עברית כל הזמן

So first of all I will say welcome
to my uncle Avigdor
that you are actually my father’s uncle my
grandmother’s (of blessed memory) brother
I teach a daily word
in Hebrew, to all kinds of English speakers
and today the word is “great grandchild” or “great grandchildren”
and I thought, well, I know someone with many great grandchildren
So … – may they multiply
May they multiply, huh?
So in 1945 when
you emerged from the camps, did
you imagine you would have thirty-five great-grandchildren?
Absolutely not, I am all in all…
when I was released from the camp I was fourteen
at my bar mitzvah I was still in Auschwitz
but with time
I started, with God’s help, with all the hardships
the difficulties of immigrating to Israel
and that in itself is a story in
itself, but with time with God’s help
I was drafted, and we built a beautiful family
I was also in four wars in Israel
So it’s clear that at some point
once you start a family
then you start to develop
this warmth
Because before that it was constantly longing for
the family that is no more
And that way you start to get used to (things)
and to believe that I will have, God willing
that I’ll live – not just grandchildren, but great-grandchildren
and may they multiply – it is a great feeling
and I thank the Creator of the world.
Do you have anything you want to say
to all kinds of English speakers
who are learning Hebrew?
I came from a very Hassidic home
and studied Talmud and Chumash (Torah) as a child
so in fact
the difficulty was to speak the new Hebrew
and to talk – instead of saying “borich” (with a Yiddish accent) to say ברוך (blessed)
The foundation I already had
but otherwise I was immediately immersed
because as soon as I arrived in the country
I went to yeshiva
a year later I joined the army
I was together with Hebrew speakers all the time
