Technically, sports team is קבוצת ספורט[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/נבחרת-#.m4a” /]. But the more common term, at least when speaking of professional sports, is נבחרת[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/נבחרת-#.m4a” /] – literally, the chosen.

For example:

[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/נבחרת-#.m4a” /]בשבוע הבא נבחרת ישראל תשחק נגד קרואטיה.

Next week the Israel team will play against Croatia.

נבחרת comes from נפעל verb להיבחר[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/נבחרת-#.m4a” /] – to be chosen – which itself comes from the root ב.ח.ר[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/נבחרת-#.m4a” /], also the root of בחירות[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/נבחרת-#.m4a” /] – elections.
