how to say “separately” in Hebrew

The Hebrew word for to separate two things from one another is the הפעיל verb להפריד[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/בנפרד-#.m4a” /], for example:

[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/בנפרד-#.m4a” /]אף אחד לא היה יכול להפריד ביניהם.

No one could between them (separate them).

But to separate from one another is the נפעל verb להיפרד[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/בנפרד-#.m4a” /], for example:

[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/בנפרד-#.m4a” /]בסוף הם נפרדו.

In the end they broke up (separated).

Following להיפרד, we have separately: בנפרד[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/בנפרד-#.m4a” /] – literally, in separation.

For example:

[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/בנפרד-#.m4a” /]ישבנו בנפרד לאורך כל הדרך.

We sat separately the whole ride (way).

But there’s another word for separately: לחוד[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/בנפרד-#.m4a” /]:

[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/בנפרד-#.m4a” /]בחתונה הזאת הגברים והנשים יושבים לחוד.

At this wedding, the men and the women sit separately.

I’m not sure of the etymology of לחוד, but there is a biblical root ח.ו.ד[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/בנפרד-#.m4a” /] meaning avoiding and turning aside.
