מַעֲבַר חֲצָיָה
In the USA, it’s called a crosswalk. In The UK, it’s called a zebra crossing.
In Israel, it’s called a מַעֲבַר חֲצָיָה (mah-ah-VAHR khah-tsah-YAH).
מעבר comes from the root ע.ב.ר (a.b.r), meaning transition. And חציה comes from the root ח.צ.י (kh.ts.y), meaning half.
What does half have to do with crossing?
Think about it this way: when you cross the street, you’re effectively splitting it in two – or in half… like the Children of Israel did with the Red Sea.
