| בּוֹרוֹת הַזֶּפֶת לָה בְּרֵאָה (boh-ROHT hah-ZEH-fet lah-BREH-ah) the La Brea Tar Pits |
The word for tar appears in next week’s Torah portion as one of the materials which seals the floating basket of baby Moses.
The word in Biblical as well as Modern Hebrew is זֶפֶת (ZEH-fet), though in Mishnaic times it was called עִטְרָן (eet-RAHN).
Turning the noun into a verb, Hebrew plugs the three-letter root into the active-intensive פיעל form, creating לְזַפֵּת (leh-zah-PET) meaning to tar – as in the horrible practice of tarring and feathering.
