This coming Friday night, Jews around the world will be attending a service called כָּל נִדְרֵי  listen and repeat  Kol Nidre, or literally, all the vows.

A נדר  listen and repeat is the primary Hebrew and Aramaic word for vow. The plural in Hebrew is נְדָרִים  listen and repeat, but in the Aramaic dialect of this particular Yom Kippur service, the plural is נִדְרֵי  listen and repeat. In Hebrew, נדרי means vows of.

The verb to vow is the active-simple לִנְדּוֹר  listen and repeat.

בן אדם נודר נדר

Now, vow is a word we don’t use much in English, just like נדר isn’t used too much in Hebrew (except in the common expression among some religious people, בְּלִי נֶדֶר  listen and repeat – literally, without a vow, referring to the refusal to commit to doing something by way of vow). Promise is a more common word in English, as הַבְטָחָה  listen and repeat a promise, borne of the active-causative לְהַבְטִיחַ  listen and repeat to promise – are more common in Hebrew.

To swear is the passive-reflexive לְהִשָּׁבַע  listen and repeat, while a swear or an oath is a שְׁבוּעָה  listen and repeat.
