In the Torah portion to be read this Shabbat by Jews around the world, Jacob has a vision of עַתֻּדִים… וּבְרֻדִּים  listen  billy goats… (and) speckled.

בָּרֹד listen and repeat, in that context, most likely means speckled, but it can also mean multicolored. It does not, however, mean pink, though the Modern-Hebrew word for pink sounds very close to it: וָרֹד  listen and repeat in the masculine and וְרוּדָה listen and repeat in the feminine.

While we’re on the subject, here are some of Hebrew’s colors in the masculine (on the right) and in the feminine (on the left). Their meanings are indicated by their color coating.

אָדֹם, אֲדֻמָּה

כָּתֹם, כְּתֻמָּה

צָהֹב, צְהֻבָּה

יָרֹק, יְרֻקָּה

כָּחֹל, כְּחֻלָּה

סָגֹל, סְגֻלָּה
