how to say “snacks” in Hebrew

חֲטִיפִים

When we snack, we grab food. Thus the Modern Hebrew word for snack – חֲטִיף listen and repeat – means literally something grabbed

For example:

צִמּוּקִים וּבוֹטְנִים הֵם חֲטִיפִים בְּרִיאִים.
Raisins and peanuts are healthy snacks.

חטיף comes from a more ancient word, the simple verb לַחְטוֹף listen and repeat of the root ח.ט.פ (kh.t.p), which means to grab in the literal sense… as well as to receive something in the figurative, not-so-happy sense.

For example:

הַיֶּלֶד הַשּׁוֹבָב חָטַף סְטִירָה.
The naughty boy got slapped (received a slap).
