The morning prayer in Judaism is called שַׁחֲרִית  listen and repeat, as it is derived from the word for dawnשַׁחַר  listen and repeat.

In Hebrew, we talk about the dawn as it is a physical object like the sun and say that the dawn rises, as in:
 
הֵם יָצְאוּ לַקְּרָב לִפְנֵי שֶׁעָלָה הַשַּׁחַר.
They went out to battle before the dawn rose.
 
Another version of this sentence might read:
 
הֵם יָצְאוּ לַקְּרָב לִפְנֵי עֲלוֹת הַשַּׁחַר.
They went out to battle before the rise of dawn.
 
At dawn the sky is still very dark. Hence the connection between שחר and the word for blackשָׁחוֹר  listen and repeat.
