Someone pointed out that in my entry last week on different articles of clothing, I neglected to mention the word for clothing itself.

The simple word is בֶּגֶד , meaning garment. In the plural it’s בְּגָדִים  listen and repeat.

For example:

She wore nice clothes.

There’s the more generic word בִּגּוּד  listen and repeat, in English apparel, as in:

I looked for a bathing suit at the shop, but they told me they’re only selling winter apparel.

The root of these words is ב.ג.ד (b.g.d), also the root of the word for betrayal

And then there’s the higher-register word לְבוּשׁ  listen and repeat, in English, attire

For example:

Come to the ceremony dressed in appropriate attire.

לבוש comes from the root ל.ב.שׁ (l.b.sh) meaning wearing.
