What’s the connection between a Hebrew school and a radio station?
The Ulpan La-Inyan Jerusalem branch and Jerusalem Radio being housed in the same building aside, אולפן means place of study in the original Aramaic. So while we use בית ספר[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/אולפן-#.m4a” /] to mean school, אולפן has its place of honor as a special school where people go to learn Modern Hebrew. And since studio in English comes from study, the curators of Modern Hebrew decided to use אולפן to refer to a studio as well.
