A while back I did a post on breakfast cereal – דגני בוקר[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/דגנים-מלאים-2.m4a” /]. The word בוקר[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/דגנים-מלאים-3.m4a” /] means morning, while דגני[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/דגנים-מלאים-4.m4a” /] is the form of דגנים[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/דגנים-מלאים-5.m4a” /] – grains – when it’s attached to another word by what might be the word of in English – so that דגני בוקר means literally grains of morning.
For example:
[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/דגנים-מלאים-6.m4a” /]ילדים אוהבים דגני בוקר.
Kids like breakfast cereal.
Whole grains are דגנים מלאים[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/דגנים-מלאים-1.m4a” /]. Here we have דגנים instead of דגני, since the two words aren’t attached by of – the phrase does not mean grains of wholeness, but rather grains that are whole. מלאים[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/דגנים-מלאים-7.m4a” /] merely describes דגנים, rather than roping them in to form a new concept.
דגנים מלאים in a sentence:
[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/דגנים-מלאים-8.m4a” /]יש שממליצים לאכול דגנים מלאים, ויש שממליצים לא לאכול דגנים בכלל.
There are those who recommend eating whole grains, and there are those who recommend not eating any grain at all.
דגן[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/דגנים-מלאים-9.m4a” /] – grain – is also the last name of the former Mossad chief – מאיר דגן[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/דגנים-מלאים-10.m4a” /] (Meir Dagan) – who passed away in March of this year, as well as the first name of a soldier who fell in Operation Cast Lead in 2009 – דגן ורטמן[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/דגנים-מלאים-11.m4a” /] (Dagan Wertman).
