how to say “upwards” and “to the heavens” in Hebrew

אֶל עַל

It’s very likely that you’re familiar with Israel’s flagship air carrier, El Al, especially if you’ve made aliyah through the Jewish Agency or Nefesh B’Nefesh.

מטוס אל על

The idiom אֶל עַל (el AHL) means upward or skyward. I came across this term today as I began reading an article on Ynet about Obama’s speech yesterday concerning the Middle East: הַמֶּתַח בֵּין נְתַנְיָהוּ לַנָּשִׂיא בָּרָק אוֹבָּמָה שׁוּב מַמְרִיא אֶל עַלThe tension between Netanyahu and President Barack Obama is again “taking off skyward.” (hah-MEH-tahkh BEH-een neh-tahn-YAH-hoo lah-nah-SEE oh-BAH-mah shoov mahm-REE el AHL).
