how to say “to digest” in Hebrew

לְעַכֵּל

The basic Hebrew word for to eat is לֶאֱכוֹל   , of the root א.כ.ל (a.k.l).

A word of similar meaning is to digestלְעַכֵּל   , an active-intensive verb of the similar root ע.כ.ל (a.k.l). In Hebrew, it is used both literally and figuratively, as in:

לָקַח לָהּ זְמַן לְעַכֵּל אֶת הַחֲדָשׁוֹת.
It took her time to take in (digest) the news.

Likewise, the digestive system is מַעֲרֶכֶת הָעִכּוּל   .

The root first appears in Hebrew sources in the Mishnah, in the reflexive-intensive verb לְהִתְעַכֵּל    – to become digested.
