how to say “to digest” in Hebrew

לְעַכֵּל

The basic Hebrew word for to eat is לֶאֱכוֹל  listen and repeat, of the root א.כ.ל (a.k.l).

A word of similar meaning is to digestלְעַכֵּל  listen and repeat, an active-intensive verb of the similar root ע.כ.ל (a.k.l). In Hebrew, it is used both literally and figuratively, as in:

לָקַח לָהּ זְמַן לְעַכֵּל אֶת הַחֲדָשׁוֹת.
It took her time to take in (digest) the news.

Likewise, the digestive system is מַעֲרֶכֶת הָעִכּוּל  listen and repeat.

The root first appears in Hebrew sources in the Mishnah, in the reflexive-intensive verb לְהִתְעַכֵּל  listen and repeat – to become digested.
