how to say “to bring to life” or “to illustrate” in Hebrew
This week I introduced some of my students to a song by Ehud Banai called עֵגֶל הַזָּהָב (EH-ghel hah-zah-HAHV) – The Golden Calf, as Jews around the world will be reading its account this Shabbat. I’ll probably play the song with explanation next Wednesday on my radio show.
My students and I at Yeshivat Shvilei Hatorah were reflecting that the song really brings to life – מַמְחִיש (mahm-KHEESH) the chaotic experience and the desperate yearnings that provoked the People of Israel to construct the עגל הזהב.
לְהַמְחִיש (leh-hahm-KHEESH) means to bring to life or to illustrate a concept. It’s related to the word for a sense (as in the sense of smell or a sense of humor) – חוּש (khoosh).
To illustrate something with a visual representation is לְאַיֵּר (leh-ah-YEHR).
