how to say “to be witness” in Hebrew

לִנְכוֹחַ

To bear witness in the legal sense is לְהָעִיד. It’s a technical term.

But to be witness to an event, such as those that took place in 1967, is to overpowered by their magic. It’s to be present at such an event – לִנְכוֹח (leen-KHOH-ahkh).

I was not yet born in 1967, but I hear from my elders (elders is a relative term – I’m not calling anyone old) that the people of Israel were digging mass graves, bracing themselves for a second Holocaust, when five Arab armies vowed to drive tiny Israel into the sea. Then, in six days, not only was the massacre averted, but Israel found its territory tripled in size (still several hundred times smaller than Arab land)… and Jewish Jerusalem reunited.

לֹא נוֹכַחְתִּי בְּאֵרוּעֵי 67 – I wasn’t witness to the events of ’67 (loh noh-KHAHKH-tee beh-eh-roo-EH-ee ’67). But I am filled with gratitude today as I traverse this greatest city in the world.

ירושלים של זהב – Jerusalem of Gold
to appear on my Jerusalem Day special

Just as Jerusalem’s stones shine like gold, may its residents shine with goodness and kindness… and true, lasting peace.
