If you know some Hebrew, you probably thought I’d be introducing the word סִבָּה (see-BAH) for a reason. Gotcha.
Truth is, I thought of today’s word because it’s a synonym of סיבה, which appears in a song I have not yet been able to (and don’t really want to) get out of my head today, ever since I played it on my radio show this afternoon: “קוֹצִים” (koh-TSEEM) – literally, Thorns – a masterpiece, in my opinion, created by master Israeli musicians Idan Raichel and Aviv Geffen.

Anyway, the synonym for סיבה that I’m talking about is נִמּוּק (nee-MOOK). The word also means explanation. The verb form is לְנַמֵּק (leh-nah-MEK).
For example, a student might find as an open-ended question on an exam, מִיהו הַזַּמָּר הַיִּשְׂרָאֵלִי הַטּוֹב בְּיוֹתֵר הַיּוֹם? נַמֵּק (MEE-hoo hah-zah-MAHR hah-yees-rah-eh-LEE hah-TOHV beh-yoh-TEHR hah-YOHM? nah-MEK) – Who is the greatest Israeli singer today? Explain.
