Hey dear friends
In the word of the day, I wrote about “to disqualify”
which comes from “statue”, apparently
And I wrote that since a statue
is something negative in Judaism
therefore “to disqualify” is to throw (something) out
like garbage, but the original meaning
of לפסול was to chisel something
as in “chisel out two stone tablets”
which is written in the Torah (Exodus 34:1)
and לפסל means to sculpt, and therefore
a statue is something that was sculpted
So it’s true that today, the word לפסול
has a negative connotation, but originally
it was more neutral
one can say
