how to say “leader” in Hebrew

מַנְהִיג, מַנְהִיגָה

I’m reading The Prime Minsters by Yehuda Avner, currently at the part about the winter of 1947 in Jerusalem. I’m getting inspired and delighted by the daring and, sometimes, the faith, Jewish people displayed in those days… especially by one of the key leaders in the liberation of Israel, Menachem Begin.

Begin was a leaderמַנְהִיג (mahn-HEEG).

מנהיג

The word מנהיג comes from the root for driving – נ.ה.ג (n.h.g), with the root employed in an active-causative הפעיל (heef-EEL) verb structure to mean, essentially, one who causes others to drive/act. That’s the essence of a leader, as I understand it – one who motivates others into action.

Turning this verbal noun into an abstract noun, we get מַנְהִיגוּת (mahn-hee-GOOT) – leadership.

I’ve seen his amazing art at Hechal Shlomo and even acquired a piece myself.

Check out Yom Tov’s virtual gallery,
and visit his Kohelet exhibition in Jerusalem.
It’s open
throughout the summer.
