how to say “hero” in Hebrew

גִּבּוֹר

Holocaust Day is officially termed יוֹם הַזִּכָּרוֹן לַשּׁוֹאָה וְלַגְּבוּרָה listen and repeat Memorial Day for the Holocaust and the Heroism – in order to commemorate acts of Jewish resistance against the atrocities.

While גְּבוּרָה listen and repeat means heroism, a (male) hero or brave one is a גִּבּוֹר listen and repeat

Here’s a Biblical example:

הַשֵּׁם עִמְּךָ, גִּבּוֹר הֶחָיִל.
The Lord (the Name) is with you, brave one of war.
(שׁוֹפְטִים ו:יב – Judges 6:12)

גיבור comes from the root ג.ב.ר (g.b.r) meaning courage. While this root is typically associated with masculinity – after all, גֶּבֶר listen and repeat refers to a man – there’s a word for a female hero, a heroine, as well: גִּבּוֹרָה listen and repeat
