The Hebrew word for young man or guy is בחור[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/בחור-#.m4a” /], while his female counterpart is a בחורה[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/בחור-#.m4a” /].

For example:

He’s a wise and sensitive young man.

Now, בחור and בחורה technically mean young man/woman, but they’ve been known to refer to a person who’s not so young as well, just like guy and gal (or girl) might.

The root of these words is ב.ח.ר[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/בחור-#.m4a” /] meaning choice: in Biblical Hebrew, a בחור is a young man, someone worthy of being chosen for his being in his prime.
