פנים אל פנים[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/פנים-אל-פנים-#.m4a” /] means literally face to face. The expression is as old as the Bible:

And the Lord spoke to Moses face-to-face as a man speaks to his friend… (Exodus 33:11)
While Israelis today certainly use פנים אל פנים, another expression is more common: בארבע עיניים[audioclip url=”https://archive.ulpan.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/פנים-אל-פנים-#.m4a” /] – literally, with four eyes.
For example:
