ארוהח עסקית

The broader term for a business meal is אֲרוּחָה עִסְקִית (ah-roo-KHAH ees-KEET). This usually refers to the lunch special offered at restaurants, not to the business conducted over the meal – so that even if you’re not doing business, you can still enjoy the ארוחה עסקית.

Israelis prefer to call their business lunches אֲרוּחוֹת עִסְקִיוֹת (ah-roo-KHOHT ees-kee-YOHT) – literally, business meals – even though a more specific translation would be אֲרוּחוֹת צָהֳרַיִם עִסְקִיוֹת (ah-roo-KHOHT tshoh-hoh-RAH-yeem ees-kee-YOHT).

Raise your hand if you know why.

אֲרוּחַת צָהֳרַיִם (ah-roo-KHAHT tsoh-hoh-RAH-yeem), meaning literally meal of noon, is a much longer phrase to pronounce than the simple English lunch (a deviation from the normally drawn-out English in comparison with concise Hebrew). Hence, Israelis shorten their business lunch to ארוחה עסקית.

Today’s dose of Hebrew is sponsored by Yom Tov

I’ve seen his amazing art at Hechal Shlomo and even acquired a piece myself.

Check out Yom Tov’s virtual gallery,
and visit his Kohelet exhibition in Jerusalem.
It’s open
throughout the summer.
