Hey dear friends
I wrote that the word “to separate” is
to separate between two things, and perhaps
you’re asking yourselves
“one moment, there’s also the word
להבדיל'”! which appears
in the Torah portion of Genesis
and there it talks about “and He distinguished between
the water which is below the firmament
and the water which is above the firmament”
where there is sounds like להפריד (in meaning)
And the truth is that the words are very similar
but there’s a difference, that להפריד is to take
two things physically and separate them
להבדיל is more to see the difference
between this and that, so even though in
Genesis it really sounds like (the text) could have
said “and He separated between the water which is below
the firmament and the water which is above the firmament”
it could be that there, the meaning of
להבדיל is identical to that of
להפריד, but in Modern Hebrew
at least, להבדיל is to see the
differences between things, to distinguish
And perhaps this meaning (of separation) is
actually the correct meaning of
Genesis – so okay, that’s all friends, see you later
