Hey dear friends
The word “tasting” as in “wine tastings”
comes from the root ט.ע.מ, which is a root
that appears not only in Hebrew, but also
in Arabic and also in Aramaic – it’s an apparently
very old, ancient Semitic root, and it’s shared
by at least three Semitic languages
And the meaning of this root
of this word טעם (taste) is something
physical, earthy, but it’s also, at least
in Aramaic, in the beginning, something more
abstract – there they use the word טעם
to mean “reason”, and today in Hebrew
we use the word טעם in the abstract
sense, mainly in the expression
“there’s no point (reason)”, for example
“Should I buy her an air freshener for her car?”
“No, there’s no point.” – “Why not?”
“Because she doesn’t have a car”
